I loved The Christmas Sisters. This was a charming holiday story about the bonds of family and of overcoming a terrible loss. I was drawn to the cover and the subject of three adopted daughters going home for Christmas.

The main character Suzanne adopted her best friends three daughters after a terrible climbing accident 25 years ago. She has tried to be a caring and loving mom and to make up for the loss of their mother in the only way she knows. It’s now a few weeks until Christmas, the girls are grown and two of them have moved away from the family home in the Scottish highlands.

Suzanne wants everything to be just perfect for the family holiday and is driving her husband crazy and literally making herself sick. The dialogue switches between the three girls Beth, Hannah and Posy as they consider their lives and what family and the future means to them. Each character was well developed and I loved getting to know the family and their personalities.

The setting in Scotland was picturesque and perfect for a cozy holiday read by a fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate. The theme of survivors guilt played a part, as well as family, forgiveness and the joy of being with people who accept you and love you the best.
