Blogoween Post 6: Vampires

Time for some more Blogoween! Today’s prompt is from Lauren at Northern Plunder. Make sure to stop by and say Boo! 👻

Loving the monsters always ends badly for the human! Exploring and recommending my favourite creatures – vampires!

I remember reading Interview With A Vampire when I was a young teenager. I was already an Anne Rice fan and when the movie came out in 1994 it was a big deal. Especially with that cast, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise and Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater – wow! It’s streaming on Netflix now and I rewatched it this week. It held up surprisingly well to my inner critic.

  • Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles spans 1976-2016. Rice has an extremely devoted following, a large part of which is the Anne Rice’s Vampire Lestat Fan Club. Each year 2018 she hosts a Halloween Ball, which is held in New Orleans.
  • Her books are one reason I’ve always wanted to visit New Orleans!

Even prior to IWAV, in 1992 Bram Stoker’s Dracula, was another 90s movie with my favorite, Winona Ryder! At the time I was pretty excited about her casting but wasn’t a fan of the movie itself. (I must confess I haven’t read Dracula cover to cover. It was too dark for me. 🤦🏻‍♀️

And then of course Twilight! Haters can skip this part because even though I was late to the books (read them after the movie came out) I really enjoyed the story and premise. And as a fan of long sagas, I appreciated all the work that went into the four-book series.

  • Stephanie Meyer authored the series based on a dream she had. She earned an enormous amount of following worldwide and celebrates “Stephenie Meyer Day” on September 13, i.e. Bella’s birthday. There are also few Twilight-themed rock bands.

Seth Graeme Smith wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. As the title suggests, this book traces Abraham Lincoln’s life from childhood through assassination, relying upon his “secret diaries” to reveal his central role in a worldwide struggle against vampirism. The movie was pretty good if you can ignore the gore.

Elizabeth Kostova wrote The Historian. Kostova’s father told her stories about Dracula when she was a child, and later in life she was inspired to turn the experience into a novel. She worked on the book for ten years and then sold it within a few months to Little, Brown and Company, which bought it for US$2 million.

Vampire Books on my TBR

Charlaine Harris – Sookie Stackhouse, Dead until Dark #1- I’ve never watched True Blood but am interested in the books.

Deborah Harkness – A Discovery of Witches I have a copy of this one so it’s only a matter of time!

Octavia Butler- Fledgling I’m a huge fan of Kindred and want to read more by this author.

Justin Cronin – The Passage This one has only been on my radar since Tuesday. It was on a bunch of “longest reads” lists.

So tell me, who’s your favorite vampire 🧛‍♀️ ?

For the month of October, I’ve joined book bloggers Sam and Clo to celebrate BLOGOWEEN! 🎃👻. I’ll be following some of the hosted prompts and encourage you to visit the hosts and show some love!

  1. I’m a great fan of fantasy, Jaymi. I’ve read all the charlain Harris series, All souls trilogy and interview with the vampire. i haven’t read the others though. Abraham Lincoln, i think i dnfed it a quarter of the way through. And i liked twilight too, read all four books one after the other, though i can’t say i’m one of her biggest fan.
During my teens i also red all of the last vampire books by Christopher Pike…. the passage was a great read too. i have the rest of the trilogy but the cast of characters changed on the second book and i didn’t like that so i put it aside for a while. i’ve read so many, i honestly can’t remember them all.

  2. The Sookie Stackhouse books are awesome! One of my favorite book series.

I downloaded Dracula, My Love by Syrie James and I am about 70% through it. It’s not bad, but not what I expected it to be.
