Book Review | The Poet by Lisa Renee Jones #BookReview #TLCBookTours #theOCBookGirl

Welcome Back, Bookworms!

Today is #WorldPoetryDay and I have the perfect book to share! Congratulations to author Lisa Renee Jones and big thanks to TLC Book Tours and Entangled Publishing for the chance to read and review this first book in a new series.

The Poet is the first book in the Samantha Jazz series! It’s a standalone book but will lead into a much more vast world of dangers, death, and destruction.

Title: The Poet

Author: Lisa Renee Jones

Genre: Mystery, Psychological Thriller

Published: March 9, 2021

Source: TLC Book Tours

My Review:

Detective Samantha Jazz is a good detective with great instincts and a background in poetry. The story begins strong with a murder at a bookstore, poetry analysis, and a smart main character who lives on popcorn, wine, and chocolate. When Sam is called to the scene of a murder, she finds a piece of paper in the victim’s mouth with three lines of poetry on it. What follows is an engaging cat and mouse game that had me turning the pages quickly. We also get to hear from the killer in a few short chapters scattered through the book and we learn that he has a god complex and an obsession with poetry, specifically T.S. Eliot …

This one is definitely focused on the police procedural side of things and how detectives solve cases and is less of a thriller than you might be expecting from the cover. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and reading more of Lisa’s backlist.

Synopsis:

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones brings a fresh, modern take to the thriller genre that will keep you guessing until the very end.

“The poet is a liar who always speaks the truth.” -Jean Cocteau
Some call him friend or boss.
Some call him husband or dad.
Some call him son, even a favorite son.
But the only title that matters to him is the one the media has given him: The Poet.
A name he earned from the written words he leaves behind after he kills that are as dark and mysterious as the reason he chooses his victims.
One word, two, three, a story in a poem, a secret that only Detective Samantha Jazz can solve. Because he’s writing this story for her.
She just doesn’t know it yet.
