My Review:
This was a very clever and relevant nonfiction book about not listening to the self-doubt that we tell ourselves as we navigate parenting and life. Lots of funny, relatable stories and references made for an entertaining read. Where was this book ten years ago? My kids are teens now, however I recognized myself in so many sections.
As I read chapters titled ‘Tell Your Mind to Zip It. Your Soul has Something to Say’ and ‘Worrying About The Future Steals Joy From Today’ I found practical advice, real life examples and was so inspired.
We all know that voice. The one that tells us we’re not good enough as we are or we’re failing at parenting or we’re not keeping up with the Jones’. The author suggests being compassionate and trusting your intuition when it comes to your choices and decisions. To not let fear and panic add a negative layer to your inner voice.
She also talks about learning to be still and “live in the present”, not always worrying about the 456,736 things we need to get done before tomorrow. She says “The more you starve your Dragon from the drama and chaos it needs to survive, the more comfortable you’ll be with being alone and tuning into your body and breath.”
The title Slay Like A Mother refers to killing that self-doubting voice (or dragon) Ask yourself this question, What’s so wrong with being you? And then give yourself permission to not only discover your strengths but celebrate them! Practice gratitude, self compassion and live honestly!
