#AMonthofFaves : 2018 Popular Books Worth the Hype (and/or Not Worth the Hype)
I wrote about Top Ten overly hyped books in THIS post.
An overhyped book is a book that is receiving A LOT of pre-release buzz from publishers, press, bloggers, and readers in general. These are books that everyone is so excited about that they can’t stop talking about them!
Here are a few that stood out from 2018:
By A. J. Finn
“A Brooklyn agoraphobe named Anna Fox spots a new family across the way, but as she gets to know them, she finds out they aren’t at all what they seem to be, or even who they seem to be. Is it her expertise as a therapist talking, or the large amounts of red wine she consumes? To find out, Anna may have to leave the house.”
I think this book got a lot of attention because of the author’s background. Nevertheless it was a good and suspenseful read. I wonder if the author ever gets tired of the Rear Window references?!
By Michelle McNamera
“Michelle McNamara’s compelling investigation of the “Golden State Killer,” who terrorized northern California from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, is one of the best true crime books to come along in a decade.”
Excellent review here http://wesleyanargus.com/2018/11/15/investigating-cause-of-death-serial-killer-true-crime-reflects-an-authors-deadly-obsession/
I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. I’m not sure it was hyped before it’s release, but I saw this cover everywhere! I was especially intrigued since the events in the book took place in my lifetime and in my state.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
By Taylor Jenkins Reid
“Evelyn Hugo is an aging actress, famous for her work in the movie industry and also for having been married seven times to seven men. Monique Grant is a writer for a magazine, but has been in a bit of a career rut as of lately. On top of that she’s getting divorced, so she jumps on the opportunity to interview the famous Evelyn Hugo.”
What was the inspiration- was it Elizabeth Taylor? Want to read an interview with the author? Click here.
I resisted and resisted reading Evelyn until this past month! I adore TJRs style and her past books. 🤷🏻♀️ The thing about uber-hyped books is there’s almost too much pressure to like something simply because everyone else did! However, Evelyn and Monique kept me invested until the very last page!
By Angie Thomas
“Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, it involves the police shooting of an unarmed black teen. The book covers topics of race, interracial dating, political activism, grief, friendship, wealth disparity, police brutality, addiction, and the media’s depiction of African Americans”
This book was talked about a lot because of the subject matter and the state of the world today. It’s a tricky subject and Angie Thomas did an impressive job of making the story relatable and important.
What’s your favorite most hyped book?
Which books did you think didn’t deserve the hype?
Unpopular opinions are okay too!
For the month of December, I’m joining hosts Girlxoxo, Traveling with T andEstella’s Revenge for their annual #AMonthofFaves blog event – a fun way to recap the year that was. They have every day of the event (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) planned out, and you can join in anytime. Click here for more details.
I LOVED Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Thought it was fabulous! ❤

Lots of YA for you. You mentioned crime fiction- are you as big a fan of Michael Connelly as I am?! I ❤️ Harry Bosch

Oh, Harry Bosch…absolutely, especially his earlier ones. Connelly hasn’t faltered much, but these latest ones with Renee Ballard aren’t my favorites. They’re still good, but I liked some of his earlier Bosch novels better…and the ones with his brother too.

I do like Renee and my theory is MC is just prepping us for Bosch’s (really truly this time) retirement! But I agree with you on his earlier ones. Nine Dragons is my favorite (poor Eleanor) and I loved The Poet. I’ve met MC at signings a few times and I think he mentioned they were working on a script (for TV) for the Poet. He did say that he doesn’t think Titus Welliver (Amazon series Bosch) will probably never share the screen with Matthew McConaughy (Haller). But that would be pretty cool!

I read all four of these books and The Woman In The Window was not my favourite one. However, I LOVED LOVED LOVED I’ll Be Gone In The Dark.

You’re right that those four books got A LOT of hype. In the end I thought all lived up to it, except for The Woman in the Window. (That book annoyed me on so many levels!)

Hahaha that’s what everyone’s saying about Woman in the Window. Maybe I need to reread it!
