This week’s Top Ten Prompt was “Standalone Books that Need a Sequel” and I was having a hard time coming up with books that had unsatisfying or cliffhanger type endings. So my twist this week is Top Ten Books that Already Have a Sequel… a.k.a. my Ten Favorite Book Series. (Am I reaching a bit?!)
So without further ado…here’s my ten favorite book series:
1. Harry Bosch/Mickey Haller/Jack McEvoy/ Terry McCaleb / Renee Ballard by Michael Connelly
Beginning with The Black Echo (1992) we have 32 books just in this series! He has a handful of other books and short stories.
This series and this author hold a special place in my heart. The main character is based in Los Angeles and I’ve been to many of the restaurants and spots he writes about. I’ve also read Every. Single. Book. he’s written. I’ve met him several times and he also has a connection to the LA Times where I worked. His books are what got me back into reading again.
2. The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley
The story begins with The Seven Sisters (2015) and each book after tells the story of a different sister. Book 5 in the series, The Moon Sister, just published February 2019.
I’ve read every book in this series except for her latest. She’s created an epic story like no other.
3. The Bronze Horseman series by Paullina Simons
I talk about these books every single week I think 🤔. There are only three books in the series but they are epic. We begin the love story with The Bronze Horseman (2009) then Tatiana and Alexander and finishing with The Summer Garden.
4. Joe Pickett series by CJ Box
Wyoming is on my bucket list in large part due to these books. The series begins with Open Season (2001) and now he’s on his 24th book! Joe is an unlikely hero, a genuine good guy. He adores his wife and family and his home state yet always ends up being in the wrong place. I have quite a few of his to catch up on.
5. Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie King
The series begins with The Beekeepers Apprentice (1994) and she just published Book 15, Island of the Mad (2018). She’s written a creative and inventive retelling of the Sherlock Holmes stories. I think I’ve only read the first five books. I need to catch up!
6. Zoe Goldman series by Sandra Block
I hope this author continues to write more books in the series. The first book is Little Black Lies (2004) and that is followed by The Girl Without A Name and The Secret Room.
Zoe is flawed, genuine, very relatable and it has a very suspenseful plot. She’s a young doctor working in a psychiatric ward and she’s hiding a few things…
7. Evelyn Talbot series by Brenda Novak
This author has written many, many books but this series is the only one I’ve read. The first book in the series is Her Darkest Nightmares (2015) and the fourth book Blind Spot is due out August 27, 2019.
This series is about a psychiatrist who studies serial killers at a remote facility in Alaska. Very creepy and edge of your seat reads.
8. Samantha Owens series by J. T. Ellison
I am a big fan of JT Ellison, especially her most recent releases. She’s written 21 books and three series! There are four Dr. Sam Owens books beginning with A Deeper Darkness (2012). She’s a medical examiner with a tragic past who buries herself in her work to avoid facing the truth about what happened.
9. Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich
This is one of those series that’s like visiting an old friend. One for The Money (2011) was the first book to introduce us to Stephanie, Lulu, Morelli, Ranger, Grandma Mazur and many others. Ms. Evanovich is still going strong with Look Alive Twenty-Five (2018) and four other series!
10. Divergent series by Veronica Roth
10. Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins
10. Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer
I decided to include these last ones for a three way tie – they each have their good and bad points but for better or worse, they’re a big part of pop culture and my reading journey.
