Blogoween Post 1, What the Heck is a “Cozy Mystery”?

Welcome to our little corner of Blogoween 2018! ::Waves from the brightly lit, happy pumpkin, silly scarecrow house::

I’m starting the month off with a question. What the heck is a cozy mystery? I mean, I get cozy and I get mystery, but I needed more info!

According to Wikipedia:

Cozy mysteries, also referred to as “cozies”, are a subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community. Cozies thus stand in contrast to hardboiled fiction, which feature violence and sexuality more explicitly and centrally to the plot. The term “cozy” was first coined in the late 20th century when various writers produced work in an attempt to re-create the Golden Age of Detective Fiction

Okay…. let’s dig a bit deeper. According to a guest post by author Patrick Kendrick (here) there’s usually a formula to writing cozies:

Quirky Character(s) + A Non-Graphic Murder + Puzzle to be Solved = Cozy.

He also talks about pacing, point of views and style – really great article.

This author up in Maine has some unsolicited advice for those that write cozies. She advises against over-using or forgetting about pets, getting law enforcement details accurate and making sure your amateur detective actually detects. Hmm 🤔

A quick search of Pinterest turned up some awesome Halloween themed cozy mysteries. I’m loving the food references and play on words. Since I’m a big baby when it comes to scary things, this might be right up my alley! Have you read any of these?

Conclusion: So far I’m intrigued. Seems like the genre could be a refreshing change of pace, but I wonder if it would hold my interest? Does it feel repetitive? What say you? Cozy Mystery lovers, please share your favorite authors or series in the comments!

  1. I love cozy mysteries but sometimes pace is slow and humor is meh but on the whole, it cleanses the mind in between intense reads. A small community in such books makes us feel cosy inside!!

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I’m going to the library today to find some of these Halloween ones.

      1. Let me know how they are. Planning to read some cozies soon

        1. I will! BTW – Thanks for being a frequent visitor. It’s noticed and appreciated especially since I’m pretty new to the blogging community! 👍🏻🤷🏻‍♀️🌸

          1. Jaymi, that’s so sweet of you to say that. I try to comment on most posts. But I read on the go, do sometimes I like and not comment. By the time I am sitting down, I have new posts to read😂😂

            1. It’s impossible to keep up!

  2. This is so interesting! I always heard people talk about cozy mysteries, but always thought it was your typical crime novel that people tend to read next a nice fire (lol). Glad to know the difference! Do you mind if I tag this post to my Bookish Glossary?

    1. Of course! I’ve always wondered too, now we know. And wow, it’s a rabbit hole sub genre of it’s own.

      1. Yay! Thank you! and yes it is! I’ve been looking at some on Goodreads since reading your post, and WOW there is…A LOT.

  3. I’m still snickering at the title ‘Trick or Treason’ I don’t know why but it amuses me, still cozy mysteries…so technically the Scooby Doo series would be a cozy mystery series right? Basing off of what you found out. Interestingggg

    1. Definitely Scooby Doo would work 😆!

  4. Finding the right style and tone is important. There is a wide and wonderful range in cozies. Good luck!
