Top Ten Tuesday | Ten Books Outside My Comfort Zone #toptentuesday #orangecountyreads

September 3

It’s been a looong time since I did a Top Ten Tuesday post. I’m joining in this week with the following topic:

Ten Books I Enjoyed That Are Outside of My Comfort Zone

Some of these books deal with some scary or difficult subjects. Others are genres I don’t normally pick up. In all these cases I’m glad I took the chance.

  • Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, 2019 | A bisexual and a closeted gay man who both happen to be sons of high profile women in politics fall in love. I loved the story and the message!
  • Sadie by Courtney Summers | The writing is what makes this story five stars. Part first person and part podcast, this book had me racing to the finish- with my hands over my eyes!
  • I’ll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamera, 2018 | A chilling and suspenseful look at the Golden State Killer and the woman who became obsessed with solving the case. True crime used to be a favorite genre and I’m enjoying getting back into it.
  • The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain, 2018 | Her latest title is thought provoking and asks the question, how far would you go to save your unborn child? Would you literally take a leap of faith? This well loved author took a leap of faith by adding a time travel aspect that wasn’t expected.
  • After Zero by Christina Collins, 2018 | Elise is a talented poet and writer but when it comes to speaking, she just can’t. In fact, she’s keeping track of how few words she can say in a day. And would anyone care or notice? Highly recommend for all young adults especially those who sit in the back and pray no one calls on them.
  • F*ck Love by Taryn Fisher, 2015 | I laughed out loud and ached for the main characters! Made me want to visit Port Townsend, such vivid descriptions. Loved the Harry Potter references. Not at all what I was expecting!
  • Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter, 2015 | A dark and twisted tale and an edge of your seat thrill ride. Parts are difficult to read especially for a parent. She’s a master writer.
  • You by Caroline Kepnes, 2018 | Joe Goldberg is one of those characters that you get to know so well you almost start to feel sorry for them. This was a messed up, psycho stalker but… somehow I still love Joe.
  • An Untamed State by Roxanne Gay, 2014 | This was a brutal book dealing with kidnapping and rape and it was challenging to get through. It’s still an important and relevant read.
  • Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, 2005 | I wouldn’t have expected Christian fiction to be so interesting and exciting. She does a fantastic job of modernizing a bible story and bringing it to life.
  • Q. Have you read any of these books? What kinds of books are outside your comfort zone?

  • Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
